It has been reported that structural work has now completed on the City’s tallest building, 22 Bishopsgate.
Work first began on the £500 million project in January 2017.
The building, also known as ‘TwentyTwo’, is 278 metres tall, making it the second tallest property in London after The Shard. The colossal structure will house 1,275 million sq ft of commercial space and was designed by London-based firm, PLP Architecture, and built by international developers, Multiplex.
Despite the current financial constraints, the completion of 22 Bishopsgate during the pandemic shows that there are brighter opportunities at the end of a turbulent year for commercial real estate. Comparatively, the initial plan for the site, known as ‘The Pinnacle’, was abandoned due to the 2008 financial crisis.
The building will also showcase the recent technological innovations set to revolutionise traditional office space. Offices occupiers will have the ability to control smart blinds and temperatures in their workspace via an app. This software will also be able to analyse the performance of the building and its energy efficiency to allow for sufficient maintenance work to be carried out when necessary.
The interior of the property, which is next in the development timeline, will also play host to an array of amenities available to tenants. Features such as a food market, gym, bike park, yoga studio and a variety of dining options will accompany a free viewing gallery on the top floor. These services have helped the building achieve the appropriate nickname of ‘Europe’s first vertical village’.
Tenants, including renowned names such as AXA, Hiscox Ltd. and Nasdaq, are set to move into 22 Bishopsgate during the first quarter of 2021.
The completion of this landmark development will certainly leave a mark on the City’s famous skyline and will also offer a valuable insight into how future office spaces may appear.
