2021 at the CTA

20th December 2021

The Commercial Tenants Association has had an extremely busy and successful inaugural year during one of the most uncertain periods for businesses across the UK.

The CTA has grown its membership and enhanced its offering to commercial tenants dramatically over the past ten months and will continue this progress into 2022.

Following our launch in March 2021, we immediately scheduled a series of webinars designed to support tenants through several issues triggered by the pandemic.

Since then, we have devised numerous webinar series around important topics, including sustainability and key leasing events.

We also introduced our CEO Soapbox, where our founder, Peter Bell, highlights key issues that need addressing in the commercial property market and discusses how the CTA are working to ensure this market becomes a more level playing field between landlord and tenant.

Moreover, we have made appearances as industry experts on Sky News and have developed significant relationships with the Government and other stakeholder partners. We are now part of the Government’s Roundtable, which has allowed us to participate in and influence discussions around the proposed COVID-19 rent debt arbitration scheme.

In August 2021, we created the CTA’s Industry Expert Panel and this was closely followed by the launch of the Sustainability Task Force, headed by Waterman Group and Blue Marble, and the Retail Task Force headed by Dominic Curran of the British Retail Consortium.

More recently, we have established a Policy Committee which will be chaired by David Abramson of Cedar Dean.

With uncertainty a key feature of 2022, please know that we will continue to work tirelessly on your behalf. In particular, our Policy Committee will focus on lobbying the Government for the removal of the use of upwards-only rent review clauses in leases and influencing the review of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954.

Additionally, we will launch the CTA Alliance, where we will be working with like-minded organisations to strengthen the voice of commercial tenants in the property market.

These are just some of the things you can expect from the CTA in 2022 – we have many more exciting developments planned!

We will continue to work to ensure the commercial property market becomes a fairer and more equitable place for commercial tenants in the UK. We will support them in protecting their businesses and help them fight the ongoing challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thank you for your continued support.
